Japanese Onomatopoeia - 擬音語、擬態語 gionngo, gitaigo

Japanese onomatopoeic words make your spoken Japanese lively, and certainly Japanese manga come alive; zokuzoku sasemasu. It may not be overstating to say you'd be missing a half of the manga without it, where short and cryptic language is used. Your translators do generally good jobs. But, there are a numerous number of onomatopoeia extensively used in Japanese manga; some are quite difficult to translate and the nuance is somtimes lost. Because of this, some are interested in reading original Japanese words. We have compiled them extensively to assist the learning.

Our Japanese onomatopoeia dictionary below can be searched with a complete or partial Japanese or English word. An English word search will list the Japanese onomatopoeia containing the word in its translation form. The table below is now only presented to show samples. For complete search, use the search function. An audio tool is available from the home page.
