あなた :　概要を教えて下さい。What is this all about?
ベルクソン : In short, we are free when our acts spring from our whole personality.　Life is perceived as a continuous and unmeasurable flow rather than as a succession of marked-off states of consciousness - something that can be measured not quantitatively, but only qualitatively. 本質に基づいて活動すれば、我々は自由に創造できる。生命活動は考えられている様な場所・時間で区切られて、測れる物でなく、不滅無限の流れを持つ。
あなた :本当ですか。真に自由に振舞えられると言われるのですか。Are you serious? We have free will?　
ベルクソン : Nothing hinders any longer the free play of sympathy, which is ever ready to come forward as soon as the obstacle in its path is removed.　妨げる人も・神も・悪魔もいません。流れをせき止めている障害物が取り除かれれば、天岩戸が開き光が差し込むように、自由に輝き始めます。

ベルクソン : To picture in this way the future is not more closely bound up with the present in the external world than it is in our own inner life.　次の様に考えて下さい。現況(現象)は内部の生命力よりも未来を支配する力はありません。と言うよりも、未来は現況に依存する物ではない。
あなた :じゃ、どうして自由意志を感じられないのでしょうか。Why don't I experience it then?　
ベルクソン : Only ourselves prevents us from experiencing free will. You hardly feel that you have free will to do what you like. I understand it. But, that does not necessarily mean you don't have.　妨げているいるのは、我々自身です。今感じられないからと言って、自由意志が無いとは言えません。
あなた :しつこいようですが、誰も自由意志を経験したことないのが事実ではないですか。Isn't it a fact that no one has experienced the freedom of will?　
ベルクソン : It is no use arguing that we are comparing the actual state of the ego with some previous state in which the cause was perceived in its entirety at the same time as its effect was experienced.　留意して下さい。思い込んで(記憶して)いる「因」も、その「果」のどちらも現在の心でしか理解されないことを。
あなた :でも、色って目で見る為に有るんじゃないですか。Don't say the color is for human eyes to see.　
ベルクソン : Good. You're already ahead of the game. The sequence of musical notes produce the music to human brain, then why not time produced the same effect. 好いポイントだね。ここで一つポイントを一緒に考えてみよう。連続した音符は音楽を脳に感じさせる。同様に、時間も脳が感じている結果だとしたら？
あなた :Please explain.説明して下さい。　
ベルクソン : Let's suppose time is not what it appears to be for the moment. If time is not successive as we believed, what then? 時間は思われているような物でないと想定してみよう。若し、時間は考えられている様に、連続的な現象でないとしたら、どうなるかな。
あなた :あなたと同じ様に、気が知れなくなりますね。I'd feel as crazy as you are.　
ベルクソン : Indeed, as we have been dazed. Good. There are two elements to be considered, i.e., your will and the experiences. Let's examine them.　ほんと、ほんと。我々人は皆白昼夢を見ている。二つの事を検証して見る必要がある。我々の意思と経験だ。
あなた :経験は経験でしょう？How could it not be what it is?　
ベルクソン : Here again the mistake made by consciousness arises from the fact that it looks at the self, not directly, but by a kind of refraction through the forms which it has lent to external perception, and which the latter does not give back without having left its mark on them. 我々の意識が勘違いを起こしているのは、自我(精神)を直接観察するのではなく、外況を認知するメカニズムの影を見(観察し)て、自己を認識していることである。この影は我々が元々手を貸して創造したものだが、そのメカニズムに影響を与えないで、認知するこはできない。


You are basing it on the assumption of continuous time. That is the root of problem; you firmly believe that a cause must precede an effect. あなたは時間が持続性していると基本的に考えている。その為、結果は原因に基づいていると信じて疑わない。それが錯覚の始まりだ。

ベルクソン : A car came behind and passed me. What I know is the car is in front of me now. The car behind me doesn't exist, and it only exists in my memory.　一台の車が後ろから来て、通り過ぎていったとしよう。今見えるのは前にある車。後ろの車は存在していなく、記憶の中のみに存在する。

ベルクソン : The idea of a homogeneous and measurable time is shown to be an artificial concept, formed by the intrusion of the idea of space into the realm of pure duration. 時間は等質で測れる現象と思われているが、人工的概念(空想)である事を説明できる。意識(知覚)の中に空間概念を持ち込む事で、作り出される結果産物である。
あなた :どのように？How de we do it?　
ベルクソン : By the very fact of breaking up concrete time we set out its moments in homogeneous space; in place of the doing we put the already done; and , as we have begun by, so to speak, stereotyping the activity of the self, we see spontaneity settle down into inertia and freedom into necessity.　有形(一塊の)時間を細分化して、均質な空間にその瞬時を並べる。行動している像の代わりに既に終わった像で置換えば、あたかも(時間経過の中で)実際に行なったかのような列なり、自分の行為が映し出されて、自発性は惰性に、自由は必然性に変わり果てる。

ベルクソン : We involuntarily fix at a point in space each of the moments which we count, and it is only on this condition that the abstract units come to form a sum.　我々の意識は横に並べられた偶像を位置づける。この列が、抽象的な知覚から、測れることのできる現象(移り変わり)に変換させる。

ベルクソン : If it did not betake itself to a symbolical substitute, our consciousness would never regard time as a homogeneous medium, in which the terms of succession remain outside one another. もし意識がこの偶像的な影を信じ込まなければ、我々の意識は等質的な時間を創りださなかったであろう。これらの偶像はお互いに影響しない独立したものである。

ベルクソン : But, on the other hand, the synthesis carried out by our consciousness between the actual position and what our memory calls for the former positions, causes these images to permeate, complete, and, so to speak, continue one another.　まあ聞いて。これって影だけど、意識により、記憶の中に存在する前の位置から、今の位置に移動させる事で、イメージが変わ(移)り、完成する。それは「継続した結果起きた」現象と言う概念を生む。

ベルクソン : To give up certain habits of thinking, and even of perceiving, is far from easy: yet this is but the negative part of the work to be done; and when it is done, when we have placed ourselves at what we have called the turn of experience, when we have profited by the faint light which, illuminating the passage from the immediate to the useful, marks the dawn of our human experience.　長年に渡って着けた習慣や認識を覆すのは容易でない。しかし、それを乗り越えた先には、「先人によって照らされてきた」、人類が新しく経験する未来が待っている。
あなた : 　純粋な潜在意図とは？What is pure duration?　
ベルクソン : Pure duration is the form which the succession of our conscious states assumes when our ego lets itself live, when it refrains from separating its present state from its former states.　純粋な潜在意図は、自我が我々の意識を自由に解放した時、意識が経験する知覚(状況)。自我が現在の知覚をその前の知覚から分離する事を止めた時、意識が解放されたといえる。
あなた :　純粋な記憶とは？What is pure memory?　
ベルクソン : Pure memory is a spiritual manifestation. With memory we are in very truth in the domain of spirit.　純粋な記憶(知覚)とは精神の現れ。記憶は精神の宿るところ。
